This is not bamboo. – The more time I spend practicing this traditional Korean flute, the more I like it. It is not very similar to the ‘Tonette’ flute or recorder that I learned in grade school – this thing is tough to play! It took me a few minutes trying to just to get some sound. After a few weeks occasionally practicing I am able to get 5 or 6 different notes to sound good. I think that dry lips help. I like to practice a few minutes at a time once or twice a week so it will probably take me a long time to gain proficiency.

Good tone; does not come w/English directions or pictured smaller piece – This is a good starter danso. It actually has a nice tone, which is surprising considering it’s PVC. The storage case/bag is decent quality—it feels sturdy, so I think it will hold up to repeated opening and closing. There is no smaller flute piece as pictured—the list of included items doesn’t have it either, so I don’t even know what it’s supposed to be. Oh well! Quality matches the price, while still being worth buying.

not for beginners, apparently – I’ve been trying on and off for five days and I still can’t figure out how to play this thing, but I’m sure that the problem is with me and not the flute. I don’t have any experience with wind instruments beyond playing a recorder in grade school, and this flute seems to require a sophisticated embroucher in order to make it, you know, produce musical sounds. The point is, this isn’t a simple toy-like instrument you can goof around with as a novice, and so my review should be understood in that context.

Great for the price – This is a great little instrument for less than $10. It is a small plastic flute molded to look like bamboo. The plastic is hard and quite smooth; the listing says it’s PVC. As others have said, there is only the one piece, the object that appears to be a much shorter flute or whistle is not present. It does come in a zippered case with a fingering chart. I thought it had quite a pleasant tone for such an inexpensive instrument, in my opinion much nicer than an equally cheap plastic recorder.

Product description and packaging needs improvement… – My daughter plays flute and piccolo, so she was excited at the chance to try a flute from another culture. Unfortunately, when she pulled it out of the box, the fingering was in Korean, not English. We were able to find an English fingering chart (thanks Wikipedia!) and some YouTube videos. She enjoyed figuring out how to play it. I don’t think her interest will be sustained since it is basically a toy. As others have pointed out:
