Beginners, try 17 keys – It is beautiful! You will need to tune it but any tuner app can help you with it. However, the learning sheet that came with it is for 17 keys, and most tutoring online is for 17 keys. 21 keys can be very confusing for beginners. If you are not familiar with instruments and music theory, buy the 17 keys, it will make the learning process much more easier.

Beautiful Sound – This thumb piano is lovely and it sounds even better than it looks! I have had to give up the instruments I have played my whole life due to becoming disabled and this gave me a way to play an instrument again and to be creative! I like My Kalimba. – I needed a handbook to go with this instrument. I appreciate that the keys have the numbers .. letters .. etc on it. I am NOT musically inclined. I just wish that they (the indentation of the numbers .. letters .. etc) on the Kalimba were painted (?) as for me they are hard to see. I have misplaced the yellow slip that had all of that for the Kalimba. I found a website (good thing I have access to a computer) that has the Numbers & Musical notes. Not “solid” as advertised, highest four notes -very- dead, crowded even for thin fingers. – This was advertised as “solid wood”, although I had my doubts from the beginning due simply to the presence of the butterfly design; even the printed sticker on the box says “solid wood”, not only the title of this Amazon page. That aside, this is my first kalimba, so I’m not sure what regularly passes for satisfactory in the kalimba market. I for one was incredibly disappointed that the highest notes, and especially the highest four notes, are so dead sounding. I don’t mind that right out of the box this kalimba wasn’t tuned at all whatsoever, and the hammer provided must be put to immediate extensive use, I only mind that even after tuning it perfectly it still falls short of the whole instrument even being musically viable. I intend to return mine. Many people might say it’s “good for the price” or “good for beginners”, but I personally would encourage beginners to seek intermediate quality instruments, because bad tone (and stiff tines with some sharp edges) discourages practice. I wouldn’t call this piece utterly terrible, but for my purposes I’d call it disfunctional enough that it’s more the quality of instrument that’s just for decoration. The finish is matte, by the way; I had thought it was satin or gloss when I had ordered it.

Takes Practice!! – this is harder to play than expected. with my fat crazy fingers i found it hard to manipulate them to what i desired on such small prongs. it functions well. the notes are loud and clear. sturdy. compact. but the two biggest humps: it’s not perfectly ascending like a keyboard piano, and the prongs are small for the fingers.
