Great, Simple, Fun To Play, Wind-Chiming Sound Instrument That I Love To Play!!! – I never even heard of a Kalimba (or “Thumb Piano”) until I saw it as a suggestion on Amazon when I searched for another instrument. I absolutely love it!!! I just pluck out the simple melodies on the 17 tines, but I already added a bunch of songs to my notebook (even though I just bought it a week ago)!!! I already bought two more for my friends! To me, it sounds like “Japanese Wind Chimes” so even the mistakes sound beautiful! I was going to get a Mahogany one because it’s a great wood for instruments until I read about Koa wood – it’s a great wood that is only found in Hawaii!!! I am very impressed with everything that comes with this, the quality of the product, & how fun it is to play – all for around $30! There is a $20 one, but I wanted the additional plug-in for an amp or speaker in case I decide to use that in the future… VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED OVERALL!!!

It’s a great gift – I got this for my daughter as a Christmas gift. I had never seen one before, but she said it’s a very popular instrument on TikTok videos.

Impressive quality instrument, really bad instructions. – About this Kalimba, I’ve always wanted one. I like musical instruments that are out of the ordinary, like native drums, didgeridoo, maracas, etc. The Kalimba has a very distinct sound. And, in the hands of a gifted musician, can produce some wonderful music. I now have a Kalimba. But, it’s going to be a long time before I know how to play it. This one was supposed to already be tuned, straight from the factory. But, I believe that it’s like a piano. If you move it, you gotta tune it. This instrument was made where? China? Surely, after being shipped thousands of miles and all of the changes in environment, it needs to be tuned again. You will need a tuning app or instrument to help you with that. Now, this one came with a built in ‘pick-up’ so you can amplify the sound. That’s pretty cool, too, if you are adding this instrument to a band. When I first started fiddling with this Kalimba, it had a rattling noise. I thought it was defective. But, it was just the outside locknut of the pick-up line port was loose. After I fixed that, the sound is fine. The instruction book is very bad ‘Chinglish’ but I was able to make enough sense of it (mostly through the pictures) that I’m okay with the basics of it. The ‘lessons’ on the other hand, are horrible. If you don’t already know how to read music, and are fluent in the way music is written for the Kalimba, you better be ready to spend a lot of time on YouTube. Anyway, overall, I still like this Kalimba and think that the whole package is worth four stars.

Unexpected fun!! – What a fun little tone box to noodle around on. The suggestion I would have is to tap lightly on the tines when tuning. Some of the tines in the higher range will not lose their “buzz” no matter how you adjust them. This needs to be figured out and will look at more videos to try and find out what type of adjustment is best for the buzz…

In love with the sound – So fun. I never needed something like this, but when I saw it advertised to me, I caved immediately. I would have bought it anyway, but when I saw it plugs into an amp, I had to have it. Loose yourself in something without a screen.

Tuning? – User Beware: Great looking/sounding and well made instrument. And the accessories included really kick it up a few notches. But be aware that, in spite of the manual stating that it “is tuned and tested well before shipment”, mine was so grossly OUT OF TUNE that anything even resembling a musical scale coming out of it was completely impossible. Thankfully I have the mechanical and instrumental experience and equipment to tune mine – and now it sounds amazing. My concern is that someone without an ear for, or knowledge of, standard A-440 tuning might go forward with learning how to play their new Kalimba totally unaware that a problem is building (muscle-memory) in their performance interpretations. Anyone buying this and wishing to learn the art of Kalimba music should take it immediately to someone with instrument tuning experience. Now, with peace of mind, I’ll go and enjoy mine again. Cheers!
