Inspiring… try playing a Selmer SBA for a Desmond tone – This book got me started on listening to more Paul Desmond albums. While I’ve only been playing alto sax for a year, I find these transcriptions inspiring and giving me hope that one day I’ll be able to to play some of these tunes as I get better on alto. Thanks Eric for writing this book. By the way, in a very short time I’ve been able to acquire several Selmer Mark VIs made from 1960 to 1969 and two Selmer Super Balanced Action (SBA) made from 1951 to 1955. From what I hear, I think Paul Desmond was probably playing either a Balanced Action (BA) or an SBA. I own several modern Yanagisawa altos also and to my ears, playing an SBA is the closest I could get to a Desmond sound because I could play it very softly and still get that sweet “almost” Desmond tone.

A must-have for any Desmond fan. – If you’re, like me, standing in the long line of Paul Desmond wannabes you have to get this book. All the hits are here and they’re not dumbed-down, “easy sax” versions; they are the real deal. As the other reviewer said, you get to play by Paul’s standard, and get to know his approach to soloing and harmony.

Great Tool but with Limits – Lovers of Desmond’s warm and sweet tone will find this resource helpful. The alto saxophonist behind the CD included in this resource does a decent job of replicating Desmond’s tone but falls short in my opinion, as almost anyone would. What you’ll hear is brighter than what you hear from Desmond. The transcriptions alone are well worth the price. So, don’t hesitate to purchase this resource. One can also play along with an MP3 or CD of Desmond rather than the one provided if replicating the Desmond tone is ultimately important to the player.

Good book for learning Desmond’s songs – Good book for learning Desmond’s songs. The only negative, at least for me, is that the notation is quite small. Other than this small peculiarity, this book is worth the money.
